14 Polk Award Winners Are Announced

Associated Press

NEW YORK - Journalists behind stories about the global impact of the world's largest corporation and legacy admissions at elite universities were among the winners of the 2003 George Polk Awards, Long Island University announced Tuesday.

The journalism awards, covering a range of media, also honored stories about international outsourcing, the targeted deportation of illegal immigrants and the weak enforcement of workplace safety rules at a major company.

The winners were:

_ Foreign Reporting: Somini Sengupta of The New York Times for stories from the Congo, Liberia and other conflict-ridden areas in West Africa.

_ Radio Reporting: Anne Garrels of National Public Radio for reports covering the war in Iraq, where she worked without a producer or engineer.

_ Photojournalism: Carolyn Cole of the Los Angeles Times for images from Iraq and Liberia.

_ Economics Reporting: Nancy Cleeland, Abigail Goldman, Evelyn Iritani and Tyler Marshall of the Los Angeles Times, whose series on Wal-Mart examined the global impact of the company on economies and suppliers in its quest to provide low prices to customers.

_ Business Reporting: Pete Engardio, Aaron Bernstein and Manjeet Kripalani of Business Week for reporting on American companies exporting jobs to developing economies in countries where workers are paid much less.

_ Labor Reporting: David Barstow, Lowell Bergman, Neil Docherty, Linden MacIntyre and David Rummel for a collaboration of the PBS program "Frontline," the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and The New York Times. The piece examined worker safety at the foundries of McWane Inc., which makes cast iron water and sewer pipes, and showed that lax enforcement of rules contributed to thousands of injuries and some deaths.

_ National Reporting: Cam Simpson, Flynn McRoberts and Liz Sly, of the Chicago Tribune, for a series examining how men from Muslim countries were deported from the United States in mass numbers even without posing any national security risks.

_ Internet Reporting: Charles Lewis of the Center for Public Integrity, for online reports on U.S. contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan and military spending.

_ Magazine Reporting: Southern Exposure magazine for an investigation of how lending practices by some corporations victimized segments of Southern society.

_ State Reporting: Dave Altimari, Jon Lender and Edmund H. Mahony, of the Hartford (Conn.) Courant, for stories questioning Gov. John Rowland's dealings with state contractors and his use of state workers for personal home improvements.

_ Education Reporting: Daniel Golden of The Wall Street Journal for four stories that examined how children of alumni and potential donors can benefit in the college selection process.

_ Local Reporting: Duff Wilson, Brian Joseph and Sheila Farr of The Seattle Times, who traced forged Asian art and artifacts to a Hong Kong economist who was a former University of Washington professor.

_ Television Reporting: Andrew Smith and Liviu Tipurita for a piece featured on "CNN Presents" that looked at the child sex trade.

_ George Polk Career Award: F. Gilman Spencer, former editor of the New York Daily News, the Philadelphia Daily News and New Jersey's The Trentonian. Spencer was praised for his style and energy and for providing inspiration and nurturing to journalists.

Long Island University created the awards in 1949 in honor of the CBS reporter killed while covering the Greek civil war. The awards will be presented on April 2 at a Manhattan luncheon.
