Bogota

Amid Colombia's worst economic crisis in 70 years, Central Bank officials
raised the trading band for the peso, effectively devaluing the currency
by 9%, while the government announced a plan to slash public spending and
trim the bureaucracy. Officials in Bogota also acknowledged that they had
begun to include estimated income from the growing of raw materials of the
narcotics trade in its calculations of the country's gross domestic
product. That could amount to a 1% increase in the roughly $80 billion
annual GDP. Meanwhile, in the village of La Machaca, the chairman of the
New York Stock Exchange, Richard Grasso, met with a leader of the
Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), Raul Reyes, on the economic
benefits of ending more than three decades of insurgency.
