AFX News Limited India court asks Coke, Pepsi to provide product ingredient details 08.04.2006, 06:35 AM
NEW DELHI (XFN-ASIA) - The Supreme Court has told US beverage giants Coca-Cola and PepsiCo to supply it with details of the chemical composition and ingredients of their products, Press Trust of India reported.
The notice to the two companies was issued after a study released this week said their drinks contained unacceptable levels of insecticides.
The companies have four weeks in which to respond, the news agency said.
The court issued the order in response to a public interest lawsuit that contended the drinks contain harmful ingredients.
The study, published by the privately-funded Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), found that 11 drinks sold by the two US companies contained high levels of pesticide residues.
Citing the report, some lawmakers yesteday called for a ban on the sale of Coca-Cola and Pepsi, which enjoy a virtual monopoly on cola sales in India.
The US companies joined forces to reject the study.
'Consumer safety is paramount to us. The soft drinks manufactured in India comply with stringent international norms and all applicable national regulations,' the companies said in a statement.
