General Motors Cutting 30,000 Jobs Nationwide Including in Tennessee
Nov 21, 2005, 10:08 AM EST

DETROIT, Mich.- General Motors is cutting 30,000 manufacturing jobs in an effort to make the company more competitive.

The total is 5,000 more than the company previously indicated it would cut. In addition, 9 General Motors' plants in North America are closing. Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner says it is hoped that the cuts can be made through attrition and early retirement.

GM has been crippled by high labor, pension, health care and materials costs as well as by falling demand for sport utility vehicles and by excess plant capacity.

GM says plants that will close are in Oklahoma City, Lansing, Michigan, Spring hill, Tennessee, Doraville, Georgia, and Ontario, Canada.

GM'S market share has been eroded by competition from Asian automakers led by Toyota. GM lost nearly 4 billion dollars in the first 9 months of this year.
