New Boat Will Clean D.C.'s Waterways District Increases Its River Cleaning Fleet
POSTED: 11:25 a.m. EDT August 6, 2003 UPDATED: 1:04 p.m. EDT August 6, 2003
WASHINGTON -- The D.C. Water and Sewer Authority has launched a new apparatus it says will reduce the impact of general waste and debris on the District's principal waterways.
The new "skimmer boat" was launched at 10 a.m., from the Anacostia Park boat ramp. Officials said the new water-bound trash collector has the ability to pick up more than 500 tons of debris per year.
The skimmer is the second of its kind in D.C. and will be used primarily on the Anacostia River, but it will also be used on the Potomac River and the Washington Channel.
WASA chairman Glenn Gerstell told News4 reporter Greg Starddard, "It's really important that we cleanup the surface of the river. That will just make it look cleaner, and when it looks cleaner, people will be less inclined, as they are today, to just throw in an old tire, to dump in some automobile oil, to throw in a plastic bottle because they figure the surface already looks dirty so why not throw in something else."
Gerstell said he hopes the two skimmers will help keep the Washington waterfront more attractive to residents and tourists. Copyright 2003 by nbc4.com. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
