City to Unveil Ambitious Plan To Renew Anacostia Waterfront
Posted - December 03, 2003 7:48am

Washington (AP) - D.C. Mayor Tony Williams is set to unveil a plan on Wednesday night to redevelop the Anacostia River waterfront.

The mayor tells The Washington Post he'll announce a 20-year, $8 billion plan at the Southwest waterfront's Arena Stage. The city government hopes to pay for part of it with up to $250 million in revenue bonds over the next five to seven years.

The plan includes a $1.5 billion dollar cleanup of the river and its Maryland tributaries. It also calls for almost 5,000 new houses and apartments in new and existing riverfront neighborhoods in the next eight years.

It would use parks, a riverwalk, a light-rail line and a new network of bridges and roads to link shops, restaurants, office buildings and cultural attractions.
