Mayor To Unveil Anacostia Waterfront Plan Plan Would Cost $8 Billion
POSTED: 8:22 a.m. EST December 3, 2003
WASHINGTON -- District Mayor Anthony Williams is set to unveil a plan Wednesday night to redevelop the Anacostia River waterfront.
In a published report the mayor said he'll announce a 20-year, $8 billion plan at Arena Stage. The city government hopes to pay for part of the waterfront redevelopment with up to $250 million in revenue bonds over the next five to seven years.
The plan includes a $1.5 billion cleanup of the river and its Maryland tributaries. It also calls for almost 5,000 new houses and apartments in new and existing riverfront neighborhoods in the next eight years.
According to the Washington Post, the plan would use parks, a riverwalk, a light-rail line and a new network of bridges and roads to link shops, restaurants, office buildings and cultural attractions.
