SEN. GRAHAM ACCUSES BUSH OF 9/11 COVERUP
May 12, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - An influential Senate Democrat yesterday accused the Bush administration of attempting to "cover up" parts of an inflammatory report about the 9/11 attacks because it could embarrass the president.
Sen. Bob Graham (D-Fla.) said the classified report shows "failures" of the government to prevent the terror attacks.
"I think what they are shooting at is to cover up the failures," Graham told CBS.
As the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Graham's comments are significant. He's running for the Democratic nomination to challenge Bush in 2004. Graham, who led the congressional 9/11 investigation, has read the full report, but only part of it has been made public. The White House has said it is "reviewing" the material.
Graham charged that the Bush administration is withholding information about the continued existence of terrorist cells in the United States - including some with ties to foreign governments that the United States has been afraid to go after.
